The Kendall Fire Department was dispatched by Orleans County Fire Control, to a barn fire at
the intersection of Center Road and Car Road on October 19, 2007 at approximately 12:30 AM.
Responding on the initial alarm were two pumpers, a tanker and a rescue from Kendall and a
mutual assistance pumper and rescue from Morton and a rescue from Holley. Kendall 1 arrived
on the scene, declared a working barn fire, and requested Morton to send a tanker, rather than
a pumper, and augmented the response with requests for a tanker and a pumper from
Hulberton and a tanker and a pumper from Carlton. Hamlin was requested by 2C11 to fill-in
Morton for district coverage.
Kendall’s first due engine dropped a line at the intersection and proceeded down Center Road
to the farm house being seriously threatened by heavy fire brand activity. Two lines were
stretched to this exposure eliminating the threat of a second structure involvement. Kendall’s
tanker supplied the first due pumper and set up a dump tank to begin tanker operations.
Kendall’s second pumper proceeded past the scene and set-up at a hydrant on the Carr Road
to begin tanker fill operations.
A pumper from Carlton staged north of the scene to monitor fire brand activity in that area.
Once the farm house exposure was controlled, a line was stretched to the Hulberton pumper
that had located closer to the barn, and two lines were used to begin wetting down the original
fire structure. The four tankers shuttling water were able to maintain a constant water supply
for the balance of the operation. The large barn collapsed into a smoldering heap at about the
40 minute point of the incident.
