Smoke in the basement
06/14/09
An occupant of the structure was taking a shower when the water supply suddenly stopped. A second
occupant went to the basement to check the electrical breakers and discovered the basement filling
with smoke. Orleans County Fire Control was notified for a fire in a structure. Kendall Fire was
dispatched along with the following automatic mutual assistance requests: Holley with a Quint, Morton
with a rescue and an engine and Hamlin with a RIT team. Walker was requested by Hamlin’s 2C14 to
stand-by in quarters as both Hamlin and Morton are currently operating with their second engines out-
of-service.

Kendall 1 arrived on the scene and confirmed smoke in the structure. Kendall’s Engine 34 located in
the driveway and a line was stretched and charged. Kendall’s Tanker 52 arrived next and provided a
supply line to the first due engine. The other companies arrived and staged for support and the RIT
Team took up a position in the front of the structure after completing a 360 size-up of the building.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that a faulty pump motor caused the electrical failure
and smoke condition. Mutual assistance companies were quickly released and the Kendall Fire
Department cleared the scene shortly after midnight.
